Depression and anxiety in women

Anxiety and Depression in Women

Did you know women are more likely to be depressed and anxious than men? Women have a 50% likelihood of going into clinical depression compared to men. Their susceptibility to major depression is even higher compared to men. It is a fact that a woman will get a depressive episode in their lifetime.

Causes

The triggers or stressors of anxiety and depression in women differ from men. Men get depression from external triggers such as career, ability to provide, and goal orientation. On the other hand, women have internalized stressors like hormones, relationships, and emotions.

Hormonal Fluctuations

Hormonal fluctuations throughout a woman’s life span increase her chances of depression and anxiety. The onset of these ovarian hormones in pre-puberty cause body and emotional changes that result in panic and loss of control in young girls.

The impact is worse for girls with an early puberty incipience. Their hormonal and body changes do not match their social, cognitive and emotional milestones. The outcome is a rough transition to accommodate the new normal. The condition is known as precocious puberty.

There is also the occasional episodes of severe anxiety, mood swings, depression and irritability two weeks before menstruation. The condition is called premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). PMDD is a result of hormonal fluctuations before crossing the menstrual threshold every month.

Additionally, women are vulnerable to postpartum depression after giving birth because of the changes happening to their ovarian hormones. Women also get anxiety attacks and depression as they move toward menopause.

socioeconomic stressors

Aside from hormonal factors, women are also affected by socioeconomic stressors like gender-based violence, education, and income. In most societies, women are inferior to men. They get lesser pay or remain unemployed. In today’s world, it is impossible to survive on a single-income.

For women, the dependency on a partner can bring untold anxiety and humiliation. Such a life has depression triggers all around. If left unaddressed it can result in broken homes, unhealthy relationships, and substance abuse.

In most communities, women are most likely to be uneducated. The reasons behind this are vast, from teen-pregnancies causing them to drop out of school to lacking an opportunity to get an education. While uneducated, women are forced to depend on men or their relations or get blue color jobs. All these options increase their vulnerabilities to depression and anxiety from fear of lack. The situation is further worsened with the increase of single women-led households.

Additionally, women are most likely to be victims of abuse. They are the most recipients of rape, domestic violence, and murder. The outcome is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other forms of depression.
